This is a very simple site. It is a remote base linked to the system. Please remember to use PL tone when talking to it, or it will not work.

What is a remote base?

A remote base is a radio (in this case 145.000) that is linked to our repeater system. Everything on the repeater system is transmitted by the remote base, and everything heard by the remote base is heard by the system -- but not at the same time.

If you think this through, imagine you and a buddy are in the Sinuk area. You are both in range of the remote base, but not of each other. In this case, when you transmit, all users of the SPARC system will hear you ... even in Council ... through the OTHER repeaters. But your buddy will not hear you because the remote base does not transmit VHF when it is receiving VHF.

You also cannot use the telephone autopatch because once the phone line picks up in the Nome hub, the remote base transmits the phone conversation on VHF, and it quits listening ... so if you were to try to use it to place a call, once dialed you will hear the other party but they will not hear you. After a few minutes the phone patch "times out" and hangs up.

The way to fix this is to have a full-fledged repeater at Sinuk, but the project has been cancelled.

Sinuk Mountain is near the Sinuk River bridge on the Nome - Teller Highway. If you drive to the bridge, look downriver and a bit to the right. There is a large mountain looming there about 5 miles away. That is it. If you want an interesting experience, try to go to the top with your 4-wheeler. I've done it, and it was a memorable experience, but an absolute ordeal.

By the way; "Sinuk Mountain" is our Name for it. The maps do not show a Name for this location, so we took the liberty of doing so.
