All outlying VHF repeaters link to it. It has the master controller, system id and autopatch. Located at Fort Davis, near the FAA VOR site, it has battery backup power. Equipment is a Yaesu/Vertex Commercial repeater programmed for our amateur channel. A mobile duplexer does duty, along with an AGM 12 volt, 75 amp hour battery. This repeater is a fully usable UHF system, and with a UHF radio you can use it like any other. However, because it is several miles out of town, and at no significant elevation, it is not a good performer for handhelds. Its main purpose is to "talk" to the mountain sites, and the location has been chosen because of its suitability for that task. If you wish to use an "in town" repeater for Nome, make use of the VHF 146.94/146.34 machine. |
